World Whisky Day 2019

HomeThis year we celebrate the beauties of whisky, especially when they’re close to home.

Scotchology is celebrating World Whisky Day for the sixth year in a row by offering a tasting in Minneapolis, MN on May 18. We’re taking a page this year from our usual playbook and the special Canadian celebration we did in 2017 and combining them to focus on one country: the United States. We have spent five years of celebrating World Whisky Day by looking at whiskies hailing from some of the farthest reaches of the globe, and for good reason! But there’s something exciting about looking in your own back yard to find treasures you may not have known existed. And this year’s selections purposefully shy away from the big names and giant brands you might expect when you think about US whiskey. The craft distilling movement has grown wings in the past decade, especially here in the US, and we want to highlight some of these unsung distilleries who, though they may be well known in their immediate region, deserve to be praised on a larger stage.

HomeWe’re also continuing another awesome trend from last year, namely that of taking part in the international initiative Drams4Fams that was started by the Edmonton Scotch Club in 2016 and has to date raised over $50,000 across a dozen locations for food charities. And just like last year, all our proceeds will be directed to a local food charity. People and Pets Together is a surrender prevention program dedicated to helping people keep their pets when in financial distress by providing local food shelves with supplies so families in need can also feed their pets at home. Because pets are family too. We were able to contribute $700 to our charities last year and we hope this year the turnout will be even better. If you’re not able to make our tasting, please consider contributing via our event link HERE and choose the Donation option. If you can make it, buy a ticket!

PeopleandPetsIt might seem counter-intuitive to have logic as part of a whiskey tasting, but seeing as how we’re exploring the United States via distilled spirits, we’ve decided to divide up the country into regions and highlight a selection from each area. While this doesn’t quite correspond to Scotland’s whisky regions, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Can you guess what distilleries we’ll feature based on their location? We’ll update with answers as we post reviews after the tasting.

Northwest – Copperworks American Single Malt
Southwest – Whiskey Del Bac Dorado
North Central – FEW Single Malt
South Central – Balcones Single Malt Reserve 101
Northeast – Liberty Pole Peated Bourbon
Southeast – Corsair Wildfire

What to do if you’re unable to attend? Why, try finding an event via the World Whisky Day Events page to see if there’s a celebration near you. Try something new. Try something close to home. Try something you’ve always said you were going to but haven’t gotten around to for some reason or another. Try it with friends or try it alone. But try, whatever you do. Good experiences, like good dreams, are can’t be achieved if you never try. Lastly, try sharing whatever your experiences are with us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram. And, as always, please be sure to drink responsibly.
