What does a couple – one an architect – do when they find a run down castle in Ireland? Buy it and use it as the muse for a distillery. That’s at least what Mark Edwin Andrews, former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy, and his wife, Lavonne (the architect) did in 1966 to this neglected castle left too long untended in County Clare, Ireland. At Scotchology, we can appreciate fine architecture and fine whiskey, simultaneously when at all possible. This brand is known for producing exceptionally smooth, triple-distilled Irish whiskies. Method and Madness Virgin Hungarian Oak
The Method and Madness brand was launched a number of years ago as the experimental lab at Midleton distillery. Mildeton is the starting point for a number of familiar Irish whiskey brands, and this lab is a place where the different masters and apprentices can come together and share knowledge and ideas. The result is an exploration of many variants in Irish whiskey, from single grain to single malt to pot still, but using elements that are rarely seen. It’s a place to push the envelope and take risks to discover something new. Most of these elements, at least so far, are featured as different cask finishes. The Method and Madness Virgin Hungarian Oak is a single pot still whiskey finished for an undisclosed amount of time in virgin Hungarian oak casks.
Redbreast Lustau Edition
Relationships matter, both in your personal life and in the world of spirits. Because of an old friendship, Midleton distillery’s Redbreast brand was able to source casks directly from the famous Bodegas Lustau, out of the city of Jerez in the Andalusian region of Spain. The whiskey in the Redbreast Lustau Edition is aged between 9-12 years in a mix of bourbon and sherry casks (much like the Redbreast 12) before being finished for one further year in Oloroso sherry casks from the winery.
