Compass Box was founded in 2000 by American John Glaser and quickly made a name for themselves by bottling and marketing a range of blended scotch. While Compass Box found early notoriety for its conflicts with the Scotch Whisky Association but over the years they have gone from being outsiders to being respected innovators with numerous industry awards under their belts. The Story of the Spaniard is meant to be a showcase of sherry and the influence the fortified wine can have on scotch. Each of the several blends has some component of sherry maturation. The story behind the Story is a nod to Glaser’s first experience with sherry during travels in Spain.
Ardbeg An Oa
Ardbeg added another entry to their main line in 2017, the An Oa (pronounced “an oh”) is named after the Mull of Oa located near the distillery. It was released with a quirky little video by way of introduction. The focus of the An Oa is that it has spent time in Ardbeg’s gathering vat, where whisky from many different cask types are blended together. The casks included here are from new charred oak, ex-PX sherry, and first fill bourbon casks, though there is no information on how much of each kind is included. There is also no information on how old any of the whiskies blended into this single malt are, though that is common for No Age Statements.
Liberty Pole Peated Bourbon
Mingo Creek Craft Distillers was founded in 2017 by Jim and Ellen Hough. The name of their distillery and their whiskey, Liberty Pole, references the Whiskey Rebellion (1791-1794) that has its roots in Western Pennsylvania, where the Liberty Pole was raised by farmers to proclaim their resistance to the whiskey tax levied against them by a fledgling federal government. The rebellion collapsed after federal militia arrived but memory of it still lives in Washington, PA. The distillery offers six core whiskies, including a bourbon cream, and have recently upgraded their still size to increase production. In 2019, they worked with all the other Pennsylvania distilleries to create a special cask strength rye containing whiskey from each distillery for the Whiskey Rebellion Festival. The Liberty Pole Peated Bourbon is double pot distilled and aged 13-18 months.
